Combat 77 - Reviews:

Die Zeit: "Chewing gum in the ears". Punks and Skinheads are lying in each others arms when listening to the defiant sounds of the band Combat 77. Their debut album »100% Oi!« does not reinvent the wheel but offers refreshing melodies.
100% Oi! is the name of the debut album by Combat 77. Title and band name combine in word and number what it is all about: punkrock. The rough sound of the British archetypes Cock Sparrer, Vice Squad and The Adicts sticks like chewing gum on the boots of these five musicians from Hanover and Hildesheim. In the band logo it sticks deeply in the profile of the soles. But chewing gums not only can stick hard but also refresh.
The term Oi! leads back to the British band Cockney Rejects who did not introduce their streetpunk songs with the popular »One, two, three, four…« but with »Oi! Oi! Oi!«. »Oi!« means something like »Hey!«, what, spelled in the London Cockney-dialect, sounds like »Oi!«. In the early eighties this genre experienced a period of prosperity, and throughout thie years Oi! was reanimated again and again by punk- and skinhead bands. Now it is the turn of Combat 77. And one can guess: 100% Oi! is a melodic commitment to the sound of the street, celebrating unity. The band celebrates a cheerful-defiant »We belong together« and revels a festival for punks, skinheads and other outsiders. At their gigs, their fans are lying in each other´s arms - peacefully.
Their lyrics range between banal and capitalistic critics. They are about everyday life, about unemployment and about the time when the musicians were young. Unlike most of the other Oi!-Bands a woman is singing. From time to time their fellow mates form a chanting chorus. This has a good level of entertainment, especially at their gigs. The boys struggle with their instruments while the female singer nonchalantly taps with the boots. »Pop stars on MTV, brainwashed society (…) Entertainment is so dumb. Audiences blind and numb, they swallow everything the media tell them to. We don’t want your pop star shit. We don’t wanna be part of it«, these are the lyrics of the song Combat 77. The five musicians between 20 and 40 years understand their music as a counterpart to mainstream. Additionally they also play in other bands, they have jobs or study. The fact that they put some humor in the songs is shown by the last song of the album: Punky Chips Ahoy.
On 100% Oi not everything sounds new but most of it is very good to sing along with– chewing gum, with a bottle of beer in the hand.

MagaScene: When "100 % Oi!" is the title, there is definitely 100% Oi! inside. This form of punk, in the „2nd Wave of Punk“ , recorded between 1980 and 1981, was especially favoured by skinheads in Great Britain, and therefore a lot of overlapping normally took place with the band members in-between the scene. In this case, it is the same. The band from Hanover feels at home in both scenes and therefore offers the right soundtrack. 14 Oi songs in an appealing mid- to uptempo lets you instantly swing and shout. And there is also the nice booklet with all lyrics. Beautiful debut album.

Youth Goes Oi! Oi! German Oi! I LOVE Combat 77 and this song "Walking On"!

Randaleshop: Debut album by COMBAT 77, feat. members of RIOT COMPANY, ANNEX5 und VENDETTA, best melodic Oi/77Punk with female vocals, a lot of singalongs and skinhead/punk-hymns! 14 songs like "Drunk driving", "Rock this Town", "Combat77, "Double Dealer".

ANW: An Oi! band from Germany that sings in English which fortunately has nothing to do with the tumb Oi!-redneck stuff. Here you can listen to true Oi!

Amöbenklang: ...striking debüt album (2008) of this German Street-Punk / Oi!-Band!!! Found - originally as a side project of ANNEX 5 singer Kirsten, drummer Björn (Audio Kollaps, Annex 5) and musician friends of VENDETTA and RIOT COMPANY, this album becomes an absolute year´s highlight with its 77 punk rock and early 80s Oi! crossover where you want to sing out loud all the time. The high quality studio production is done by Gregor Hennig who already put the right sound to indie bands like Oomph!, P. Boa, J. Witt, Trashmonkeys and The Robokop Kraus. This sound also contributes to the fact that one likes to put this disc into the player again and again! All songs have the ultimative hit factor and a brand recognition! This is the ideal top album because all good ingredients are put together...! The cd comes with a well done digipack, a 16 pages coloured booklet with lyrics, photos and comic artwork! With these hits, cleaning one´s boots makes double fun!!!

Bandworm: Plenty of Oi! hits with ingenious female vocals.

Puke Music: Total hits with female vocals. Combat 77 consists of members from Riot Company, Recharge and the voice of Annex5. 100% Oi is not only the name of this record but also the motto. Premier league streetpunk!!!!!

Musik an sich: The beginning of 100% Oi! sounds exactly like you expect it from the cover artwork and the cd title. Dashing street punk rock kicks in the door without warning, and goes forward until
Yes, until..!
Until the vocals begin. To which this music belongs (this is what one normally expects), the accoustic counterpart of a colossus who, completely tatooed, roirs his beer breath into the microphone. But this!? Sounds nearly like a woman. But not nearly, as you have a look at the line-up. Kirsten is on the microphone.
This is not bad at all, as one notices if you get accustomed to it. And slowly Combat 77 turn out to be a pleasant unique plant in the Oi! jungle. However remarking that the band name fits much better than the cd title. 1977, this was the time of Blondie, who, at the beginning, could easily be classified as punk rock without having to change the image, thriving from punk to pop while the scene deliberately restricted itself.. Certainly this had a lot to do with the band´s success, but also with the fact that they had catchy pop melodies and choruses which lifted them from the mass of solely aggressive punk bands.
Sometimes Combat 77 really sound like Debbie Harry and Co (Walking on). But they are not Blondie. Oi! fans will like this. Because on the one hand they are not so poppy and have a stronger street credibility. On the other hand they have a series of great songs, with powerful choruses, instantly recogizalbe, which deserve to be hits, both in the scene and in mainstream radio. Please listen to: „When we were young”, „Dirty Block”, „Double Dealer”. (15 Punkte!)

Burn your Ears: Originally COMBAT 77, who got together in early 2007, was meant to be a side project. But very soon, more got out of it. Now the band from Hanover/Hildesheim has become a full time project and has released their debut album called "100% Oi!“. The five people with the charismatic female singer Kirsten make a mixture of 77 punk rock with more modern streetpunk and a huge portion of British style Oi-Punk from the early 80s. Particularly remarkful is the fact that the voice of Kirsten (who did Annex5 before with drummer Björn) fits perfectly to the music. Maybe even better than on the horrorpunk sound that Annex5 did. The voice is supported by several male voices which add to it very good, especially in the Sing-A-Long-parts, which are to be found very often on the album. This is wonderful straight punk rock with very beautiful melodies and innumerable songs which you can sing along with very loud. This debut is excellent. Here you can find 14 very strong punk rock songs which are very entertaining and exciting. Songs like "Double Dealer“, "Just Another Moron“, "Weekend Warriors“, "Walking On“ or "Drunk Driving“ confirm this, but the other ones are as brilliant as these.

Impact: Combat 77 were formed in March 2007 by members of the bands Riot Company, Annex5 and Vendetta from Hanover and Hildesheim. On their CD "100% Oi!" they enjoy playing old 80s Oi!/Streetpunk!!

Höhnie: authentic 77-sound from Hanover + Hildesheim..........female vocals

Ramtatta: Wow, very a arty cd says hello when opening the package. Convincing cover artwork I have to admit. The record of the 4 boys and the female singer comes in a beautiful digipack with thick booklet. This booklet contains all the lyrics with nice comic draws; moreover there are some photos in order to recognize them at gigs. This flows very good, and the music tops everything. It´s very well played streetpunk at its best with a lot of catchy tunes which go and stay in your mind instantly. No surprise, because although this is their debut album, all members have played in other bands before and have already released some good stuff. However, this is 14 x top class punkrock, mainly with female vocals, and partly the female singer gets support from her male fellows. The vocals have the necessary portion of snot and sometimes sound very sweet as well. You bet! - this is my kind of stuff. The album consistently stays on a high level and, damn it, they rock my cd player, and according to their lyrics they also rock various towns. When doing this, there´s sometimes trouble ahead (Out on parole), but they keep their chins up (Walking on). A nostalgic view into the past (When we were young), and some critical moments regarding the own environment (i.e. with the song Right to Work which deals with false promises and the export of work places) makes everything perfect. So there´s nothing to complain about the lyrics, because there is a lot of fun and a little bit of seriousness in life without the wagging forefinger. Summing up it´s a superior cd with catchy tunes which goes into your head instantly and keeps on doing so even after various replays.

Running Riot: Combat 77 is the name of the side project which recruits people from great bands like Riot Company, Recharge and Annex 5. However, if you think that this band is just doing it for the money, you are wrong. Because this debut album is mega great, and the title 100% Oi! is more than just a name. The album consists of 14 songs which can be declared as "streetpunk at its best“. The female voice from Annex 5 singer Kirsten has fascinated me before, and with the chorus support of the male musicians this sounds truly great. Nearly every song has a hymn - like chorus where you can sing along easily, combined with a great strong sound, especially with the strong guitars. Thumbs up! Also great are lyrics with their rough charm. There is a content for everyone, the lyrics deal with gambling, prostitution, good and not-so-good weekend adventures or losing the driving license because of too many drinks. Subjects from everyday life, so to say. ;) In my opinion, the best hits of this record are "Double Dealer“, the band song "Combat 77“, a super song about all the pop star shit being broadcasted again and again, and "Just Another Moron“. But also the opener "Out On Parole“ has more than a strong chorus to offer. I cannot stop swarming about this record. This is definite worth buying, such a great record which was released by Contra Records.

Punk´n´Roll Radioshow: Since the Oi train doesn´t roll through my living room at the moment, I was a bit skeptical when this album arrived in my letterbox. However the tide turned quickly when I listened to the 14 songs because in the appealing digi pack there was a lot more hidden than just Oi. I would rather describe the songs as melodic streetpunk / streetrock with occasional Oi influences. Good drive, a pounding recording and with a superb female voice. Lyrically in articulated English about working class subjects. COMBAT 77 consists of members from the bands Riot Company, Annex5 und Vendetta (Hanover). Therefore it´s not surprising that this debut album totally rocks and sounds nearly perfect. The album was produced by Gregor Hennig, who also worked for Oomph, Witt etc. Summing up this is a very good release that is worth buying.

The 253 Boys: Blown away by the intensity and brilliance of your music, walking on ranks up there with anything we've ever heard. Much Respect, Keep Rockin!

Wanda Records: Best German Oi sound with female vocals, featuring members of Annex5 and RiotCompany.

Crazy United: I give ZERO points for the very unimaginative album title, but fortunately the sounds of this cd being released as a digipack is million times better so I can overlook the stupid title. Their 4 song demo could already convince me, and this album tops it all because NONE of the 14 songs is on average. For me it is the BEST RELEASE 2008 in the oi! / punk / streetpunk genre so far. Each song is total catchy and you normally cannot get them out of your ears anymore. This is the way streetpunk has to sound. Melodic, a total smack in the gob and with 100% brand recognition. Now I want to see this band live in order to see how the qualities lie there. 1+++++  FRANK

Punkrock Fanzine : Take a few band members from Riot Company, Annex 5 and Vendetta, put them in a rehearsal room and here´s the band. First I was a bit deterred by the album title, but the sound is stricking. It is a flawless tribute to the early 80s England punk sound with the perfect lyrics as well. They deal with unjust police terror, the resistance to stay sober while driving and the right to work. Astonishing but not negative is the fact that there aren´t any political lyrics at all. After all it´s about the style and about the daily fight. Summing up, the record is an excellent surprise in the current dull development of streetpunk. Straightforward punkrock which is authentic because of the age of the band. Certainly also a very good live band.

Oi! the Print: Daring title and band name, but very convincing, the lady and the gentlemen. Here we have a new band from the Annex5/Vendetta and Hildesheim´s Riot Company environment. Musically this is a perfect point of intersection. The concise voice of the female singer has a lot of brand recognition and fits very good to the sound. Logically the first thing that comes into your mind is Annex5, but the guitars make a distinct Oi! sound this time. Very interesting and not easy to compare with other bands, you should definitely check this out for yourself. I cannot think of any other band at the moment with such charisma and I´m eager to know how Combat 77 will rise up in the German Oi! heaven.

KB Records: Very fine Oi! project with people of the exceptionally gifted Riot Company, Recharge and female vocals from the singer of Annex 5! Simply test and you won´t regret it...

Sunny Bastards: What a real blast!!! The debut album from COMBAT 77, with members of RIOT COMPANY, ANNEX5 and VENDETTA, will bite you in the ass with finest melodic Oi/77Punk with female vocals and fat boy´s choirs, a lot of singalongs and skinhead/punk anthems! 14 Songs like "Drunk driving", "Rock this Town", "Combat77, "Double Dealer"...without any failures! Done very well, and Discipline, Sparrer or Perkele send their regards! Buy!

Plastic Bomb: From COMBAT 77 out of Hanover you hear powerful Oi !-Punk that is normally very rare in this country. The band with female vocalist Kirsten orientates itself strongly on old British Oi!-Punk like COCK SPARRER, SHAM 69 and ADICTS. In the latter case there is the coverversion of „Numbers“ on this CD. The female voice blends very well with the many-voiced, strong male choruses. The whole works is characterized by melodies and always on search for the next catchy tune. Appeals much better to me than ANNEX 5, where Björn and Kirsten are also active. Only the title „100% Oi!“ is a bit flat. One would have recognized this anyway. Comes with an ambitious digipack.

United Kids: New punk rock formation which is recruited from members of Riot Company and Annex 5. Fine singalongs, fat 77 sound, they will have a great future.

Contra: Absolute hits with female vocals. Combat 77 consists of members from Riot Company, Recharge and the voice of Annex5. 100% Oi is not only the name of the record but also the motto. Streetpunk from the premier league!!! Vinyl is limited to 500 copies.

Punk´n´Roll Radioshow: ...I keep on playing this record over and over again.

Screwed Blued Tattoed: Combat 77 is a quite new Oi! band with members from Annex5, Riot Company and Vendetta. Their first record 100% Oi! is released by Sunny Bastards. Yes, 100% Oi!, what shall I write about this, simple riffs and uncomplicated English lyrics, of course socially critical in a very successful combination, I like it. The only thing to find fault with is that the female songer should have made her voice a bit more snotty...

Broken Silence: Originally found as a side project by female singer Kirsten (ANNEX 5) and drummer Björn (ANNEX 5, AUDIO KOLLAPS) with musician friends, COMBAT 77 rapidly enjoyed great popularity in the streetpunk community and present their first album after one year. The band´s concept is to combine traditional 77 singalong punk with early oi! punk, and it works out fantastically. 14 songs where you can perfectly sing along with. With Kirsten´s distinctive ensouled and slightly rough voice, supported by a stout-hearted choral singing, songs like Walking On, Double Dealer or Drunk Driving are potential hits for bars and dance floors. 100% Oi! was produced by Gregor Hennig (OOMPH!, PHILIPP BOA, WITT, TRASHMONKEYS, THE ROBOCOP KRAUS). CD comes in a digipack with marvellous 16 page 4c-booklet incl. comic artwork, lyrics and photos.

Bulywif: I got your new cd a week a go and I cant stop listen to it,its great, melodic that makes you start singing it wherever you go... All the respect, and cheers from Serbia!

Desordem Social: Porra SOM LOKO!!!! E ISSO AEW COMBAT77 OI OI!

Disturbance: 100% oi!
